China Camp

September 18 and 19, 2004

WHAT:  China Camp is located four miles east of San Rafael on the shore of San Pablo Bay. From Highway 101, go east on North San Pedro Road for five miles until it enters the park.  We will be camping at Back Ranch Meadows Campground.  Latitude/Longitude: 38.0144 / -122.4600

After arrival, we hike ½ mile from the parking lot to the campsite, set up camp, and store our gear.   During this camping trip, we will take a short 2 - 3 mile hike, work on advancement (including the trail to first class, map reading and orienteering).

WHEN:  Arrive at the clubhouse at 8:00 AM on Saturday, September 18, to arrange food, sort patrol gear, and set car assignments, so that we can leave by the clubhouse by 8:30.  For our return on Sunday, we will leave China Camp at approximately 11:00 – 11:30 to arrive at the clubhouse by approximately Noon or 12:30.

ADVANCEMENT:  This trip offers excellent advancement opportunities for all, especially those seeking to achieve Tenderfoot, Second, and First Class.  This trip will also count towards your Camping Merit Badge.  Please review your requirements so that all those attending are prepared for the advancement opportunities.  The campsite will be adjacent to the parking lot and, hence, this campout will provide an excellent opportunity to complete some of the cooking requirements for second and first class scouts.  In addition, to other advancement work, we will work on map reading and orienting skills.

WHAT TO BRING: See our website: http://T88SF.org for a list of essential backpacking items and for a link to the California State Parks website and more information about China Camp. If you do not have a pack, ask an adult leader about borrowing one from the troop.

Water will be available at the campsite, but bring water containers for cooking, personal use, and for the hike.

Read up on or review your map reading and orienting skills in your Boy Scout Handbook.

As always, don’t forget to bring:

a)      a completed permission form,
