OVERNIGHT BACKPACKING TRIP

TAMARANCHO

MARIN COUNTY

 

 

WHAT: Located in the heart of Marin County, Camp Tamarancho is a Boy Scout camp located just two miles from Sir Francis Drake Blvd. It has over 480 acres of meadows and redwood forested campsites. The camp is just 45 minutes from San Francisco. http://www.boyscouts-marin.org/camps/tamranch.htm

 

WHEN:  Meet at 7:30AM to leave the clubhouse by 8:00AM on Saturday, October 23rd.  We will return early afternoon on Sunday.

 

DETAILS:  Camp Tamarancho is located on the north slope of Mount Tamalpais in central Marin County, west of Fairfax. 

 

We will cross the Golden Gate Bridge, take Highway 101 to San Rafael, go west on Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Left at Olema Rd in Fairfax (follow the signs).  

 

Adults are invited, of course, on this fun trip. 

 

BRING/WEAR: 

·        “Troop 88 T-shirt” and warm clothing, as well as rainwear, and the 10 Essentials. 

·        Lunch for Saturday.

·        $10 == $6 for food (dinner and breakfast), and $4 for gas, bridge toll.
Also bring some lunch money for Sunday’s lunch in Fairfax.

 

ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES/ACTIVITIES:  Review your book - what do you need for Tenderfoot, Second and First Class?  Don’t forget to log this backpacking trip in your handbook addendum, as this counts towards your Camping Merit Badge and as a troop activity in your advancement to First Class.

 

ACTIVITIES:  Among other things, we will do Lashing, making a ballista, catapult, and other camp gadgets.  In the afternoon will be Safety on the range instruction with Linda, range master, followed by Archery / Rifle / Tomahawks, followed by an evening campfire and night games.

 


** A NOTE FOR NEW SCOUTS:  Young scouts need a backpack, they can borrow one, just let your Guide know.  Also, do NOT pack everything on the equipment checklist, only what you deem appropriate for the trip.  If you need help or advice about packs and what to pack, please consult with an experienced scout.
