Bay Area Ridge Trail 10 Mile Hike

Annadel State Park

WHAT:  This is our fourth hike in a series of hikes on the 400 mile Bay Area Ridge Trail (BART).  The 5,000 acre undeveloped park, 60 miles north of San Francisco on the eastern edge of Santa Rosa (in the Valley of the Moon) offers over 40 miles of hiking trails meandering through rolling hills, seasonal streams, meadows, and woodland.

This hike qualifies as a troop outing in advancement to First Class, will count towards the hiking merit badge and is an opportunity to learn additional outdoor skills.  Members of the Venture Patrol (HAT) should be using this hike to check out equipment and stay in condition.  You should be going on this hike if you are planning to join future Venture Patrol outings or go on the High Adventure trip this summer.

Parents are of course invited to join us!  If some parents are interested in putting together a second group (that would hike a shorter distance) for this event, please contact me.

WHEN:  We will meet at 7:15 am and leave the clubhouse by 7:30 am on Saturday, January 8th.  We plan to return to the trailhead by about 2:30 pm and we will be back at the clubhouse by 4pm.

DETAILS:  Take Highway 101 north to Santa Rosa and then take Highway 12 going east.  Drive about 2 miles on Highway 12 and turn right onto Montgomery Drive.  At approximately 2 ½ miles, turn right onto Channel Drive.  Annadel State Park Headquarters is about a mile down the road on your right.

BRING/WEAR:  The “10 Essentials”.  Troop 88 t-shirt and appropriate clothing.  Check the weather before the trip.  Bring water (I recommend at least two liters) and a lunch.  Pack only what you want to carry, but keep in mind that it may rain.  The average high temperature in the winter is in the 50’s.  Remember to “layer”.  Wear comfortable trail shoes that fit properly and bring your blister kit.

ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:  Review your Scout Handbook - what do you need for Tenderfoot, Second and First Class?  Don’t forget to log this hike in your handbook addendum.

For older scouts, this is a great training hike in a beautiful area, is part of the Santa Clara County Council High Adventure Team’s Bay Area Ridge Trail patch program, an opportunity to “discover” wilderness areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and in part fulfills your leadership requirements.
