Marin Headlands 10 Mile Hike

Sunday, October 9, 2005

WHAT:  This is beautiful hilly hike in the Marin Headlands beginning at the Tennessee Valley trailhead.  On the first 6-mile section, we will hike north on the Miwok Trail to the  Dias Ridge Fire Road.  Then we will head west to Muir Beach to pick up the Coastal Trail.

On the remaining 4-mile section, from Muir Beach, we will hike up the Coastal Trail and return to the trailhead.  Those who want to hike only the last (4 mile) section, please contact me so that we can make arrangements.

This hike qualifies as a troop outing in advancement to First Class, will count towards the hiking merit badge  (if you complete 10 miles) and is an opportunity to learn additional outdoor skills.  Members of the Venture Patrol (HAT) should be using this hike to check out equipment and stay in condition.  You should be going on this hike, if you are planning to go on future backpacking trips.

Parents are of course invited to join us!  If some parents are interested in putting together a second group (that would hike the shorter distance) for this event, please contact me.

WHEN:  We will meet at 7 am and leave the clubhouse by 7:10 am on Sunday, October 9th.  We plan to return to the trailhead by about 1:30 pm and we will be back at the clubhouse by 2pm.

DETAILS:  Take Highway 1 north to Mill Valley and then take Tennessee Valley Road going west.  Drive about 2 miles to the trailhead.

BRING/WEAR:  The “10 Essentials”.  Troop 88 t-shirt and appropriate clothing.  Check the weather before the trip.  Bring water (I recommend three liters, as there is no water on the trail) snacks, and a small lunch.  Remember to “layer”.  Wear comfortable trail shoes that fit properly and bring your blister kit.  Bring $2 to give to the drivers to cover bridge toll and gas.

ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:  Review your Scout Handbook - what do you need for Tenderfoot, Second and First Class?  Don’t forget to log this hike in your handbook addendum.

For older scouts, this is a great training hike in a beautiful area and an opportunity to “discover” wilderness areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and in part fulfills your leadership requirements.
