Marin Headlands Overnight
Saturday and Sunday, September 27 and 28, 2003
WHAT: This
is our first campout trip of the year,
designed for the older Scouts to introduce the younger Scouts to camping and backpacking. Our new Scouts will have an opportunity to
complete complete their Tenderfoot and Second Class requirements. The hike in is less than a mile. Adults are invited and can make it easily! Scouts will carry their sleeping bags and personal
gear in backpacks. New Scouts who do not have
backpacks may pack their stuff in a duffel bag or large day pack. But everything, including pack, duffel, water,
food and cooking gear will be carried in.
WHEN: We
will meet at the clubhouse at 7:30 am and leave at 8:00 am on Saturday, September 27th,
and return to the clubhouse by early afternoon on Sunday, September 28th.
DETAILS: We
will be camping at Haypress Campsite, located ¾ mile from Tennessee Valley in Marin
County (Marin Headlands).
Take Highway
101 over the Golden Gate Bridge. Then take
the Mill Valley/Highway 1 exit at the bottom of the hill.
About ½ mile after the exit, just before entering Mill Valley, make a left turn
going to Tennessee Valley. After driving
about 2 miles on a paved and flat winding road you will come to parking lot. If you are driving, dont forget to get your
parking permit from Mr. Dotson. We will don
our packs and walk the short distance (3/4 mile) to the camping area. We will work on basic Scouting skills on Saturday,
sleep in Troop tents, cook our own food and return on Sunday, shortly after noon.
High
Adventure Scouts may use tarps, but be aware that the camping area lacks branches and
trees for anchoring your tarp. We recommend
carrying hiking staffs or poles to prop up your shelter.
BRING/WEAR:
Bring a bag lunch for Saturday Wear
your troop 88 t-shirt. The weather will be
mild, but always be prepared for cool weather and rain.
Backpackers will bring water in their pack. Dinner
on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday will be provided.
Wear sturdy shoes. Bring $6.00 a head
to repay your patrol cook for food, and $2 a head to repay your driver for bridge toll and
gas.
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: New Scouts will review what they need for
Tenderfoot and Second Class. Older Scouts
will help the younger ones - do you need any requirements for Second and First Class? Cook? Bring
a compass and the rest of the ten essentials.
** A NOTE
FOR NEW SCOUTS: Young scouts need a small
pack - a borrowed full size one doesn't work. Also, do NOT pack everything on the equipment
checklist, only what you deem appropriate for the trip.
If you need help or advice about packs and what to pack, please consult with an
experienced scout.
