SKYLINE HIKING TRIP

BAY AREA RIDGE TRAIL
WHAT: The Skyline Trail is always a popular hiking route and is part of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. The trails are very good (mostly single track) and the scenery is terrific. We will hike up to Vollmer Peak, at 1,913’ it is the highest point in the Oakland Hills.
WHEN: We meet at 7am and leave the clubhouse by 7:15am on Sunday, May 16th.. We will return to the trailhead about 2pm and will be back at the clubhouse by mid afternoon.
DETAILS: We cross the Bay Bridge and then take Hwy 580 East and then Hwy 24 East. Take Hwy 13 South towards Hayward and exit at Park Blvd. Turn left at the end of the off ramp onto Park Blvd, heading East, and go over the freeway. Turn Left at the next stoplight onto Mountain Blvd. Turn Right at the next Stoplight onto Snake Rd. The road will fork in about 1/4 mile, stay to the right which becomes Shepherd Canyon Rd. Follow Shepherd Canyon Rd. to the top of the hill where it intersects Skyline Blvd. Turn Right onto Skyline and 1/2 mile later, park at the Skyline Gate Staging area, which will be on the left hand side of the street.
We will hike to Vollmer Peak and eat lunch there or on the way back to the trailhead at Steam Trains picnic area .
Adults are invited, of course, for this hike.
BRING/WEAR: Troop 88 t-shirt and proper clothing - including hat and sunscreen. Bring water and a hardy bag lunch. Wear sturdy shoes and bring your blister kit. Also bring $2 to pay the drivers for gas, bridge toll and any parking fees.
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: Review your book - what do you need for Tenderfoot, Second and First Class? Bring a compass and the rest of the ten essentials. Don’t forget to log this hiking trip in your handbook addendum, as this counts towards your Hiking Merit Badge and as an outing in your advancement to First Class. For the High Adventure Team this is your last training hike before the Ohlone Wilderness Trip.
